Player Ratings: Northampton Town 0-2 Posh

It was a solid, if unspectacular performance from a Peterborough side made up primarily of fringe players last night as Posh completed a comfortable 2-0 victory away to local rivals Northampton Town. Here’s how The Posh Report scored each player:

Starting 11
Christy Pym: Two good saves and one rather fortunate double save helped ensure he kept a fourth clean sheet in a row. Handling was good, however he sent too many kicks straight out of play as he kicked to the wings in Toney’s absence. 7.5

Dan Butler: Most of Northampton’s good work in the first half came down his side and he let danger man Nicky Adams deliver too many crosses from his flank. Improved second half as he got forward more and delivered one excellent pass to release Ward. 6

Nathan Thompson: A solid if unspectacular first start. Got a good 65 minutes of game time as he pushes to regain match fitness. Largely untroubled defensively as Northampton targeted opposite flank but used ball well and was a game runner going forwards. Booked for a cynical foul shortly before his substitution. 6.5

Rhys Bennett: Solid enough but a couple of old flaws were still on show. He still passes erratically and was beaten a little too often in the air from crosses, lucky not to concede a penalty late on after one ill-advised lunge 6

Frankie Kent: A calm, composed and error free performance from the stand in skipper. His calmness in possession is vital when Posh try to play out from the back. 7

Louis Reed: Gradually asserted more influence as the game wore on, did not perform to quite the same level as recent matches but was key to Posh’s second half dominance. 7.5

Harrison Burrows: Struggled in the first half and switched sides with Ward as he struggled to help contain Adams. Much improved in the second half as he got forward well and forced a couple of saves before substituted late into the game. 6

Joe Ward: His energy and pace caused Northampton issues throughout the second half. Showed again he is a more than able deputy to either Boyd or Knight and will be hoping to break into the league side more regularly. 7.5

Serhat Tasdemir: One great pass released Siriki Dembele as he won the corner for the first goal. Showed good skill and passing but needs to find a way to get into the game more frequently. Promising. 7

Siriki Dembele: Terrorised the Northampton defence with his pace and skill. Scored a superb goal as he tricked his way past three defenders before smashing home. Could have had more as created numerous chances for himself which he failed to convert. Linked up well with Idris Kanu. 8.5

Idris Kanu: A great display in his first competitive outing for the Posh in over a year. Looked a different play both physically and figuratively. Demonstrated terrific pace, much improved strength and was not afraid to take on his man. A constant menace and bundled home his first Posh goal. Decision making and final pass in and around opposition box can improve. MOTM 8.5

Subs
Niall Mason (0n 66): A very comfortable night’s work as came on with Posh 2-0 ahead and after any Northampton threat had been extinguished. 6

Ivan Toney (on 78): Came on late presumably in an attempt to get him some minutes upfront alongside Dembele. N/A

Josh Knight (78): Ran hard for 15 minutes but no real time nor need to make a substantial impact N/A
